The US company is planning a massive expansion over three years and wants to create thousands of new jobs in the UK.
Amazon has announced a major investment offensive for the UK: 47 billion euros are to be invested over the next three years. The money will primarily go towards two new state-of-the-art distribution centers, which will be added to the warehouses already planned. The e-commerce giant intends to create thousands of new jobs with this investment. Amazon already employs 75,000 people in the UK, making it one of the ten largest private employers in the country. The UK is the Group's third-largest market worldwide - after the USA and Germany.
A large part of the 47 billion euros is earmarked for Amazon Web Services (AWS). The cloud subsidiary had already announced 9.4 billion euros for the expansion of its UK data centers last autumn. This sum is now included in the overall package. The massive cloud expansion shows how important the B2B business has become for Amazon. While most customers only know Amazon as an online retailer, the company now makes the majority of its profits from corporate customers.
Amazon is also planning to invest in Bray Film Studios, where the "Lord of the Rings" series for Amazon Prime Video is produced. The London headquarters are also to be expanded. Interestingly, Amazon is even adding the salaries of its British employees to the investment sum. This shows how important the public impact of the 47 billion announcement is to the company. The massive UK expansion fits in with Amazon's strategy of investing in stable markets and strengthening its local presence - even if the global economic situation remains uncertain.
